From Struggle to Strength: Jason’s Path to Success

Jason Taylor faced numerous obstacles in his path toward employment. From periods of homelessness to limited transportation options—his journey was far from easy. Jason faced additional hurdles as a person who aged out of foster care without a high school diploma. His encounters with the court system, a criminal background and struggles with substance abuse furthered his uphill battle.

Jason discovered a Goodwill^© Career Center through a referral from LifeSet Youth Villages^© —a valued community partner. He recognized the importance of empowering himself through Goodwill’s skills training and employment tools. Jason’s primary goals were obtaining his GED, receiving general support and structure, and securing sustainable employment.

Goodwill: A Catalyst for Change

When Jason became a part of the Opportunity Center at Goodwill Industries of Kentucky, he received a wide range of services tailored to his unique needs. Jason attended:

• Goodstart —an intensive program designed to help victims of domestic abuse and individuals recently released from incarceration.
• The Soft Skills Academy —a course that covers six modules and teaches critical workplace skills, including attitude, conflict resolution, dependability, safety, self-presentation and team building.
• One-on-one coaching and mentoring sessions to help him with the personal and professional development skills he needed to overcome his unique challenges.
• Career support services to help him with job readiness skills, such as resume-building tips and mock interviews to enhance Jason’s job prospects.

Goodwill was committed to addressing his holistic needs by extending comprehensive support. These services helped Jason secure housing, get transportation, pay utility bills and fulfill his nutritional needs to help ensure a stable foundation for his overall well-being and success.

A Testimony of Determination

Thanks to Jason’s hard work and dedication, he’s overcoming his employment barriers. He’s secured permanent housing and is actively working towards obtaining his driving permit. Notably, Jason successfully passed the NRF Foundation Customer Service & Sales Certification Exam—fueling his enthusiasm to pursue a career in the customer service field. Reflecting on his journey, Jason shares a powerful message, “What separates talented individuals from successful ones is a lot of hard work!”

Jason’s story serves as an inspiration to all facing similar challenges. It reminds us that our circumstances do not define us. Jason learned he could overcome challenges and redefine his future with resilience, hard work, and the support of Goodwill programs and resources.
